Jorge Was the Nice One: A Parable
In an attempt to keep abreast of what's happening in this country, I have a Google news alert sent to me everyday of all the English news articles that mention Bolivia. (I also try to read several online Bolivian newspapers too.)
This article popped up today about twin jaguar cubs captured in Bolivian. The good one was sent to the Denver zoo and the meaner one went to the Santa Cruz zoo here in Bolivia. The Bolivian zoo keepers named the nice one Jorge (after George Bush) and the mean one Osama (as in Bin Laden). Last Saturday, Jorge was shot after he attacked a Denver zookeeper, who subsequently died.

“Jorge wasn’t bad, really,” the Bolivian zookeeper said. “I don’t know what could have happened. Perhaps because he was so well-behaved, the trainer (in Denver) thought she could trust him. But you never know with wild animals. Anything can happen at any moment.”

Incidentally, the woman who was the zookeeper was Ashley Pfaff, a girl I was in band with at Capital High School in Santa Fe...quite shocking, really.
